Programme overview

Technical depth: Practitioner · Practical mode: Case study

Introduction

Most disputes on FIDIC-based projects start with administration, not with the conditions themselves: a missed notice, an Engineer's determination issued late, a variation instructed informally or particular conditions that quietly shift risk. Each lapse converts a manageable issue into a claim. This Core Concept course equips employer, Engineer and contractor managers to run a FIDIC contract clause by clause, from the 2017 Rainbow Suite and its 2022 amendments to legacy 1999 forms still in use. Participants work on contract extracts from several sectors and leave with a FIDIC Contract Management Plan for a real project.

Course Objectives

  • Select the appropriate FIDIC form for a project's design responsibility, risk profile and payment basis
  • Review particular conditions against the FIDIC Golden Principles and identify changes to the risk balance
  • Administer the Engineer's role, including agreements and determinations, within contractual time limits
  • Operate programme, payment, variation and adjustment procedures with the correct notices and records
  • Manage completion, taking over, defects and contract closure, including securities and insurances
  • Produce a FIDIC Contract Management Plan with obligation and notice registers for a live project

Target Audience

  • Contract managers on employer and contractor teams responsible for day-to-day contract administration
  • Engineers and consultants appointed to act as the Engineer or Employer's Representative
  • Project and construction managers accountable for delivery under FIDIC conditions

Conclusion

A FIDIC contract rewards the party that administers it consistently and records what it does. This course moves from choosing the right form and understanding the 2017 changes, through roles, risk allocation and particular conditions, to the payment, variation, completion and close-out procedures that fill a contract manager's week. The final day applies each procedure to case material and a live project, producing a FIDIC Contract Management Plan that gives participants a clear routine for the contract they manage next.
